Installing GNU/Linux

A beginner's workshop aimed at those who wish to learn the advantages and benefits of GNU/Linux. Participants will install and base configure a system ready for desktop use.

On completion of this workshop, participants will be able to install a PC with a fully functional desktop system that includes a selective range of OpenSource applications. They will have also gained the basic skills needed to be able to use and improve their knowledge of a GNU/Linux system.

You will learn:-
  • What is GNU/Linux? The principles of Open Source.
  • Minimum System/Hardware Requirements.
  • Harddisk formatting and partitioning.
  • Different Filesystem types.
  • Pre-Installation checks.
  • Choosing base installation media.
  • Base Installation procedure.
  • Set-Up/Administration Tools (YAST)
  • Selection of Applications.
  • Hardware configuration.
  • What is a root user?
  • Configuring X-windows.
  • Choice of Window Manager
  • Lilo, dual-booting and log-ins.

An ideal starter for those with little or no experience of GNU/Linux and who wish to discover the current capabilities of the system for themselves in an environment where the system is in use 24/7.
